Displaying Art 101: My Favorite Ways to Showcase Prints Without Damaging Walls

One of my greatest joys as an artist is seeing my work out in the world, living in your homes, adding warmth and personality to your spaces. There's something incredibly special about knowing a print that started in my sketchbook has found a place in your everyday life.

That said, I totally understand the hesitation that can come with hanging art prints, especially if you're renting or just don't want to put holes in your walls. So today, I wanted to share a few of my go-to methods for displaying art without damaging walls. These display techniques are renter-friendly, affordable, and easy to use. Whether you’ve purchased a cat art print, woodland animal illustration, or one of our minimalist fine art prints, these tips will help you get the most out of your artwork.

1. Damage-Free Adhesive Strips

Adhesive wall strips, like 3M Command Strips, are one of the easiest and most popular ways to hang lightweight framed prints. They work by bonding with the wall and frame surface, then peel off without leaving marks or residue. These are ideal for most fine art prints. Just be sure to follow the weight recommendations. If you’re framing with glass, that can add extra weight.

Command products are widely available in the U.S. and Canada at stores like Walmart, The Home Depot, Canadian Tire, and Staples / Bureau En Gros. If you're elsewhere, check local home improvement or stationery shops for similar removable adhesive strips.

2. Picture Rails and Floating Ledges

Picture rails (or gallery rails) are thin horizontal moldings installed near the ceiling, allowing you to hang art using hooks and wires. This traditional method adds charm and flexibility, letting you rearrange your art without new holes. Floating ledges, on the other hand, are modern and simple to install. Just one or two anchors and you have a full art shelf. Use them to layer a few of your favorite prints with seasonal decor or books.

For ledges, check out IKEA's MOSSLANDA or West Elm's gallery ledges. In Canada, retailers like Structube or Bouclair may also carry similar products. Check what’s available in your area to avoid international shipping hassles.

3. Easels and Display Stands

Tabletop easels and mini art stands are perfect for styling prints on desks, bookshelves, or entryway tables. They’re a great alternative if you want to rotate art frequently or mix your prints in with everyday objects. You can find display easels at most art supply stores or online retailers like Blick Art Materials in the U.S. or Deserres in Canada.

4. Leaning Framed Prints

For a casual, cozy vibe, try leaning your framed art against the wall. This works best on mantels, console tables, or low bookshelves. Layer prints of different sizes for added depth and visual interest. It gives your space an intentional, styled look without the need for any hardware.

5. Wire Hanging Systems

If you want the flexibility of rearranging art without drilling new holes, wire hanging systems are a professional-looking solution. These are great for heavier frames or for creating a gallery wall. The systems usually include a rail (installed at ceiling height), hanging cables, and adjustable hooks. Try brands like Gallery System Art Displays or AS Hanging, both of which ship internationally. You may also find similar systems at home improvement stores or specialty art shops in your region.
